Rose Lee Hoffman January 19, 1920 – July 5, 2009 Resident of St. Louis. After a courageous battle with heart disease and Alzheimer’s, Rose Lee passed away painfully far from the family and friends she held so dear throughout her life. Rose Lee was born and raised in St Louis, having lived in the German St. Vincent Orphanage run by the Western Provence of the Sisters of Christian Charity as a child. She was a seamstress by trade, and wife and mother by heart.

Rose Lee was the oldest of 3 children born to the late Munroe “Chic” and Catherine Lee Dyel, and wife to the late Elvis Raymond Hoffman for 66 years. Rose Lee was preceded in death by her children Barbara and Bill, older brother, Charles, older sister, Josephine (John), and younger sisters, Ruth (Harold), and Eva Mae (Harold), and grandson, Jeffrey.

She will be forever remembered by her grandchildren Linda (Bruce), Sandra (Steve), Kathleen, Billy II, David (Jonda), Matthew (Cassie), Michael (Audrey), Jonathan (Sarah), Jennifer, great grandchildren, Andrew (Alicia), John, Sam (Jessica), Peter, Elliot, Matthew, Claire, Mark, Scott, Rachel, Ryan, Megan, Ashley, Heather, Jonah, Michael Jr., Michelle, Jonathan, Jr., great-great grandchildren Aiden and Matteus, and countless other family and friends who were blessed to know her. Rose Lee was a seamstress for Hoffman Upholstery for decades until her retirement in the early seventies. She was a dedicated Catholic, devoted to the Blessed Mother, member of the Moose, and firmly committed to her son and grandchildren. She loved bowling, crocheting, Big Band music, California, story telling and remains the best cook in human history.

Grandma was my best friend. She taught me everything I know about class, dignity and strength amidst the storm of adversity. She was the consummate peace maker and kind to all creatures, large and small. She was opinionated, fervent, compassionate, and a fiery advocate for her grandchildren. She impressed upon me that good always prevails and to pray for the souls of our enemies.

The German St. Vincent Orphanage will say a mass for the repose of the soul of Rose Lee. Family and friends are invited to a memorial mass on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 11:00 am at St. Marys of the Barrens/The National Shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Perryville, Missouri, (2 hour drive from St. Louis) at 1811 West St. Joseph Street, followed by a catered lunch at the site. Birth Certificate

Rose Lee was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1920. She adored her son, Bill, and in later years, her grandchildren with especially close relationships with Linda and Sandra.

She attended mass every Sunday and was a huge fan of the Blessed Mother. She and grandpa closed down Hoffman Upholstery twice a year for fishing excursions to Lake of the Ozarks.

She was a ferocious cook and never missed a birthday. While she will be missed dearly, she has left behind an enduring legacy of style, class and a vernacular that was all Rose Lee.

We love you and miss you, grandma.
